THE FOLKS ASSEMBLY

The Folks Assembly is an animation project we’re developing for YouTube. We started with the idea of bringing six very different personalities into one group. Before getting into their individual stories, we needed a name that captured what brought them together.

“Folks” had the familiar, easygoing quality we were looking for. “Assembly” suggested a gathering, but also something built from separate parts, which felt right for this unusual bunch. Once we pitched the name and it was approved, the project felt properly underway. We had something everyone connected with and a clear go-ahead to develop the characters and the overall feel of the cartoon.

Defining their roles gave us something to build on. Flux is the unpredictable trickster, Nomi thinks things through, and Echo quietly takes everything in. Vex brings discipline and strength, Drift is drawn to the unknown, and Patch is the practical one who wants to figure out how things work. These differences give the stories room to develop. The same problem can lead to six very different reactions, and that’s where much of the humour and tension can come from.

The challenge has been turning those descriptions into characters whose personalities you can actually see. Calling someone restless or reserved is straightforward; expressing it through their proportions, clothes and posture takes more consideration. We’ve been working through how each character looks and moves, looking at them individually and together. A pose might work in a still image, but it also needs to make sense once the character starts moving.

A large part of that work is in the materials. We wanted the characters to have a physical presence, with clothes and accessories that feel like they could exist. Fabric needs a visible weave, folds and thickness. Straps need to sit convincingly against a jacket. Boots need weight, and metal needs to respond to light differently from cloth. The shared teal palette connects the cast, while the textures give each outfit its own character. There’s a lot to resolve in those small details, especially when moving between a full view and a close-up.

The introductory film brings the cast together through movement and a song that introduces each personality. It gives us a first look at how they work on screen and a foundation for developing the cartoons further. Getting to this stage has taken time, and there’s still work ahead. We’re giving ourselves room to revisit things, make adjustments and get the details right.

The Folks Assembly is an ongoing project. What we’re sharing here is a look at its development so far, and we’re looking forward to seeing these characters come fully into their own in the finished series.
